8 Simple Ways to Practice Compassion

Compassion is the realization of ONEness. To practice compassion is to realize that there is no separation between you and your fellow human beings; no separation between You and Them. We are all ONE. ~ Luminita D. Saviuc

Compassion

Believe it or not, compassion isn’t something reserved only for the monks and the saints of the world.

Compassion is for everyone.

We can all learn to practice compassion and enjoy the many wonderful benefits that come from doing so. And today I will share with you 8 ways that are meant to open your heart so you can practice compassion, not just towards others, but also towards yourself.

8 Simple Ways to Practice Compassion

1. Stillness

Stillness is all about being fully present in your body, and mindful of all that is. When you are in a place of stillness, you See things with different eyes. You are aware of everything that happens to you and all around you. And it seems as though every person that comes your way, and every little thing you do, reveal their sacredness to you.

This is the power of stillness.

To be still is to recognize yourself in the eyes of your fellow human being and realize that what you see in another is nothing but a reflection of your own humanity.

2. SEE through, not with, the eye.

“This life’s dim windows of the soul Distorts the heavens from pole to pole And leads you to believe a lie When you see with, not through, the eye.” ~ William Blake

The heart Knows things the eyes cannot see. And those who live from the heart Know that things are never as they seem.

To see through, not with, the eyes is to realize that the darkness you see in your fellow human brother is also in yourself. But also that the love you give to your brother, is the love you need to offer to yourself.

There is no separation.

3. Kindness

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” ~ Plato

To walk this earth, to feel the pain, the sadness, the anguish and the suffering that comes from experiencing your humanity is not an easy thing. But kindness helps make this whole journey a lot easier.

Kindness teaches us that there is no separation between ourselves and those around us. No separation between our pain, and the pain of the whole humanity. And that we are all in this together.

We are not alone.

You are not alone.

4. Look people in the eyes

The eyes are the window of the Soul. And no matter how hard people might try to hide themselves, from themselves, and from the whole world, their eyes will always tell the Truth.

Look people in the eyes.

See them for who they truly are.

See their pain, their sadness, their untold stories… See their fears, their doubts, their deep longing for love, and their insecurities.

See the things they don’t yet have the courage to tell you. And seek to ease some of that pain with your love.

5. One Love

“Without opening your door, you can open your heart to the world. Without looking out your window, you can see the essence of the Tao.” ~ Lao Tzu

You might think that you and the rest of the world are different from one another. But the truth of the matter is that there is no difference between you and your fellow human beings.

We are all ONE – one family, one love, one humanity. And we all want the same things – to be Loved, to be Acknowledged, to be Seen, to find Joy and to be at Peace.

6. Judge not

“Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don’t want it. What seems conceit, bad manners, or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone.” ~ Miller Williams

Since we were all created Perfect and Holy, and in the eyes of God, we will always be Perfect and Holy, there is no need to judge, condemn, or criticize anyone.

No need to point the finger. No need to ‘fix” and no need to control anyone.

Everything is exactly as it should be.

There is nothing about us lacking – nothing about you that needs ‘fixing’ and nothing about your fellow human being that needs ‘improving.’

All is perfect.

7. Seek to Feel the perfection of things

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” ~ Genesis 1:31

The story of humanity is a great mystery that cannot be understood with the mind.

But it can be felt with the heart.

Seek to feel the perfection of all things – to feel it with your heart, and not to try to understand it with your mind. Because just as the wise Lao Tzu said it in the Tao Te Ching more than 2500 years ago:

“The more you know, the less you understand. The Master arrives without leaving, sees the light without looking, achieves without doing a thing.” ~ Lao Tzu

8. Give thanks for all

As you go through life, you will discover that every person that comes your way – no matter if good or bad, comes bearing precious gifts.

Some come to teach you compassion, others to help you forgive and let go. Others insist on teaching you how to free yourself of the past and give up all attachments. And even though many of these lessons are hard and painful, they are all intended to help you free yourself of all the traps, fears, and illusions that have been keeping you in the dark.

They are all meant to help you return Home so that you can honor the Truth of who you are and the Truth of who everyone else is.

They are all angels in disguise. You might not See this now, but in time you will.
