The Power Of Gratitude – Why Gratitude Brings Happiness

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” ~ Melody Beattie

Often times we get so busy with chasing after the things we want, after the things that are somewhere out there, that we forget to enjoy the present moment, we forget to be happy. You hear people all the time saying: Oh, I will be happy when I will get this and that, when I will get there, when I will do this and that… and when those things do happen, they go on to planning the next thing and the next thing and forget to enjoy the things they achieved so far, the things they longed for. By doing so people also forget to enjoy what they already have, they forget to be happy. Don’t let that be you.

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

Realize that now, at this moment you have more than enough. It’s okay to have dreams, it’s okay to aspire to grow, to learn, to evolve and to achieve big things but it’s also important to celebrate yourself, to celebrate your accomplishments, to celebrate the present moment and to celebrate your life. With gratitude comes happiness and with happiness comes more gratitude.

The Power Of Gratitude

Here is a really beautiful gratitude poem which I’m sure you would love.

Be Thankful

“Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something

For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations

Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge

Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes

They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary

Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are

also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles

and they can become your blessings.”  ~ Author Unknown

Really enjoyed this post, Dana, especially the poem. It’s admittedly a challenge for me to be grateful for difficult times and mistakes made, but that seems to be the key, doesn’t it?

By the way, like Warren (see above), I found out about your blog through – it’s a pretty neat site for folks who want to get into the habit of practicing gratitude daily. Definitely worth checking out!

I’ve had to deal with my focus on the word “when.” “When my book comes out, THEN I’ll be happy.” “When I land this large client, THEN I’ll be happy” etc. Once I got over that and paid more attention to being thankful for things exactly are they are right now, life got a whole lot better!

Love the message of this post. Gratitude does breed happiness and we should never take things for granted – and be grateful for those that support us and extend kindness.

One of the greatest thing about gratitude is being happy with the awareness of not only do you have enough, but you yourself is enough as well. I started keeping a gratitude journal earlier in the month, and find that even when it doesn’t look like a great day there is always something to be grateful for. It can be as something as small talking to a friend on the phone, or a stranger giving up a seat for you to sit. Gratitude opens your eyes that quite often take for granted, and allows the door of appreciation to open wide to accepting and giving more.

The idea the what you focus on grows is definitely at work here. If you focus on what you don’t have (i.e. nothing), you will get more of nothing (or at least it will feel empty if you get it), but if you focus on what you have, it grows.

You only have to focus on the time, money, love and stuff around you…

Gratitude is an attitude that everyone should have. I have gratitude towards everyone that comes into my life. Also you should show your gratitude to God for everything he provides and gives to you. I feel very blessed for everything that he has done for me and my family.

This is soo very true and I am finding that since I learned this lesson, and became grateful for what I DO have every day instead of constantly pining for what I do not have, that my life has filled with things that I never thought I would have – not only the physical, but the spiritual and emotional as well. My emotional health has strengthened considerably with my learning gratitude and acceptance, as well as patience and sincerity!

Very good piece here! I am enjoying your blog immensely! Thank you for taking your time to do this for the world! You have made a difference, at least for me you continue to make me think about various things daily, and THAT makes a difference in ME being able to give back to the world! Rock on!!!
