Think back to a moment in your life when you could actually sit in silence, calm your mind of all distractions and just simply enjoy the solitude of your own company.
Can you even remember the last time that happened?
For most of us, we simply can’t remember. And even though we may crave that intimate time in a state of just “being”, we feel like so many other obligations take priority.
If this describes you, keep reading. Find out why you must change this way of thinking and how only a few minutes a day can totally change your life for the better.
Living in this age of technology, we can never really unplug. We check off the items on our “to-do” list and it just never ends. There is always more to do. Instead of getting shorter, the list just gets longer.
With information at our fingertips, we are bombarded with new strategies, processes and the latest and greatest that we need to implement immediately. So there is always one more thing to add to our list. We must keep up with the latest or we will definitely fall behind.
And then we find ourselves on the hamster wheel. Running around and around in a circle and never able to jump off.
How Do You Change Your Life in Just a Few Minutes a Day?
When we simply go through the motions of our day-to-day lives, checking the boxes, plowing through our obligations, we become robots; just going through the motions. We don’t have the time or energy to truly “feel” our emotions.
Feeling these emotions and allowing them to be our internal compass, steering us on the path of life, we can live our true authentic lives.
What happens when we neglect our emotions:
- We become numb
- We lose sight of our life path
- We experience issues with relationships
- We are more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol
- Creativity is stifled
It is probably safe to say that no one really wants to live their lives in this manner. It is not something we simply choose for ourselves. But for busy professionals, it happens quickly and without warning. By the time we realize our deep state of unhappiness, it is hard to pinpoint where the unhappiness is stemming from and how to fix it.
The first step is simply recognizing that you are overworked, stressed out and have lost sight of who you are as a person and what brings you joy.
When we fall into a rut of distractions such as doing what others expect from us instead of following our own path, we are not always able to utilize our unique gifts and this quickly leads to a life of unhappiness.
What happens when we take the time to listen to our authentic self?
- Each day is a gift – we are excited to begin our day
- We are an inspiration to others
- We attract like-minded people into our lives
- We become resilient to life changes
You may wonder how to get to this place of finding your authentic self. To really dive deep, it definitely helps to have a spiritual life coach to guide you, offer suggestions and lend a helping hand to keep you focused and on-course.
There are ways to get started on your own. In as little as 5 minutes a day, you can see positive changes in your life before the week is over.
First, you must commit to a minimum of 5 minutes a day. If you can spare more time, even better. This exercise is a form of meditation where we will focus on our feelings, what comes up for us and how we can apply to our lives.
What will you need?
- A quiet spot where there will be no interruptions
- A comfortable place to sit or lie down
- Soft, relaxing music (optional)
- A timer or stopwatch to set the time
- A journal
Turn off your phone so you will not be distracted by calls or text messages. Remove anything out of the room that could cause a distraction.
Set your timer for 5 minutes (or the amount of time you desire). Lie or sit in a comfortable position. Turn on soft, relaxing music if it helps you relax. And just breathe. Stop your busy mind. Forget everything that needs to be done for the day. Just focus on your breathing and pay attention to what comes up for you. Allow yourself to feel it.
If it is uncomfortable, don’t push it away. Continue to feel so that it can be released. Do not be alarmed if you start to feel heavy emotions and you may possibly start to cry. This is good and is a sign you are releasing.
When you are done, immediately grab a journal dedicated to this practice and jot down every emotion that surfaced. You only need to spend a minute or two on this. Consider what those emotions are relaying to you.
Do this every day and check in with yourself every few weeks to once a month. Dedicate some time to reviewing your journal, making note of the emotions that are surfacing and what you think it means in relation to your life.
You should begin to see a theme emerging. Apply this theme to your life and ask yourself what it could mean for you. How can you use this information to live more authentically?
Over time, you will begin to feel lighter, freer and happier. You will begin to navigate the changes in your life with more ease and resilience.
This is simply an easy, first step you can take today to begin the process of tuning in to your authentic self as a means of finding happiness and resilience throughout the changes of life.
If you wish to dive deeper, a spiritual life coach can be a great resource in helping you navigate the process of living an authentic life.
Living a life, true to who we are at a soul level, is the best gift we can give ourselves and the world around us.
We will be happier doing what comes naturally for us and the world will most definitely benefit from what we have to offer. And remember, it only takes a few minutes a day to change your life!
