When did you stop dancing?
When did you stop singing?
When did you stop being enchanted by stories?
When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?”- Gabrielle Roth
We all carry around so much unwanted emotional baggage. We clutch onto the past even when it doesn’t serve us. These emotional encumbrances are things like fears, trauma, limiting beliefs and unwanted habits. As we go through life, this weight grows heavier and heavier, unless we have a release valve.
Emotions are not merely mental phenomena; they are stored in the body as well. Sitting too much and hardly ever expressing ourselves through movement only makes matters worse.
A stagnant body begets a stagnant mental and emotional state, and vice versa. A lack of physical movement creates blockages in energy flow.
The easiest way to shift your mental and emotional state is by shifting your physiology. Why? Well, it’s incredibly difficult to think your way out of negative energy and emotions.
The most effective portal to inner peace is through physical release.
Get out of your head by getting into your body.
Enter: Intuitive Dance Therapy
One of the best and most enjoyable methods of transmuting negative energy and releasing emotional blocks is through dance.
No, you don’t have to be a professional. You don’t even have to go to a dance class. All you need is a body and some music.
Self-expression through movement is really the name of the game here. You don’t have to look cool, have a style or know any dance moves. You just need to intuitively move and flow according to how you feel and you will start to release the negative energy from your body.
Here are 7 Steps to Release Negative Energy Through Dance
1. Assess your physical, mental and emotional state
How are you feeling?
What emotions are you experiencing?
Where in your body do you feel it?
What do your thought patterns look like right now?
2. Put on a song you love
Choose a song that instantly invigorates you and makes you feel good.
3. Feel your body’s reaction to the song
Be mindful of any changes that occur when you hear the song.
4. Move intuitively
Dance like no one is watching.
Don’t think, just move.
Don’t let your mind get in the way.
Give yourself permission to move freely, however that may look.
5. Dance for at least five minutes
It doesn’t have to be a long practice that’s difficult to squeeze into your day.
Five minutes is all you need.
I usually feel a profound shift in my being after five minutes of dancing.
6. Send your body gratitude
Be thankful for your wonderful body.
Immerse yourself in gratitude.
7. Reassess your physical, mental and emotional state
Dip into a state of mindfulness and notice any changes in your physical, mental or emotional states.
Chances are you feel a lot better.
Build the habit of engaging in this practice of intuitive dance whenever you’re feeling stuck or irritable so that you can release the negative energy and feel better.
It sounds so simple and straightforward, but how often do you actually do something like this?
Remember, a body, some music and five minutes are all you need.
Unblock your energy. Discover your inner bliss.
