Being sad and feeling low is sometimes natural in life. We all have our ups and downs, and even if we are suffering from depression, there are ways to brighten up a bit. You might feel sad or depressed because of some past events and situations.

That is normal because everyone can get hurt, but you shouldn’t dwell on such events and feelings, because your future is filled with great things.

However, you have to do a little something about it and help yourself become stronger and happier. Luckily, here are 6 powerful and surprising ways to release past suffering and be happy again.

1. Practice Mindfulness.

A sad and depressed mind tends to overthink and cling to things that are wrong and worries about all the negative things that may happen in the future. That is all unnecessary and these negative thoughts only encourage misery and bad feelings, which definitely doesn’t help with overcoming depression and sadness.

However, if you turn to mindfulness, you will teach your mind to focus on the present moment and forget about the past or worry about the future. Since being focused on the present moment is a bit unnatural to our minds, you have to help it a bit to master this skill. Focus on what surrounds you at the moment, use all of your senses.

Focus on taste, sight, sound, smell, and touch and you will see how it is much harder to worry about other things while you are engaged in the present. 

2. Exercise More.

All the bad feelings can be gone if you would start exercising. Regular exercise brings so many benefits to your mind and body and it can help you stay focused and overcome your depression.

If you exercise your body will release endorphins which help improve your immune system and improve your mood. Not to mention all the other health benefits of exercising such as prevention of heart diseases, lowered blood pressure, prevention of cancer and it can greatly contribute to your self-esteem. 

So, pick an exercise regime you like the best. You can go to the gym, pilates, yoga, martial arts and basically anything else you feel most comfortable doing. You can even try something new and look into some adventurous indoor activities, such as rock climbing, and have some fun while you’re body and mind are getting the exercise they need. 

3. Get Enough Sleep.

If you are well rested, your mood is automatically way better. Sleep deprivation causes irritability, nervousness and stress, which impacts both your mood and your immune system. That is why healthy sleep enhances feeling well, both mentally and physically.

So, you should make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night, and every morning you will get up more easily, your daily life will be more productive, you will become more emotionally balanced, your creativity will spike and your overall way of life will get better. 

4. Distract Yourself.

When our minds are bored and not stimulated, they tend to go to that dark place and overthink. That is why it is essential to keep your mind busy, so you can forget about past events and painful feelings.

You can easily achieve this by getting a new hobby, such as collecting things, doing puzzles or reading books, or you can get out and have fun with your friends and family.

All these minor activities will keep you and your brain occupied and all those negative feelings will simply be put away for a while, if not disappear completely. 

5. Stop the Negative Talk.

When a person suffers from any type of depression, they tend to perceive the world in a negative way. They even usually blame themselves if something goes wrong which often leads to self-doubt and the horrible feeling of worthlessness.

The best advice here is to supervise your inner negative talk and try to stop it when it occurs. You need to remind yourself that you want to be healthy and that you want to forget about such bad feelings and simply let go.

Respect yourself and try and insert some positive thoughts and reinforcements and never believe your mind when it starts feeling bad and when it tries to make you feel about things you are not responsible for. 

6. Change the Music.

Believe it or not, but the kind of music you’re listening to can greatly impact your mood. If you’re used to listening to songs that are a bit slow and depressing and that remind you of the past events, you will feel sad and you will dwell on the past. That is why you need to change the tunes.

Try listening to some upbeat music and you will see how it will positively affect your mood.

Happy and upbeat music can alter your brain chemistry, actually, and thus you will feel more positive and happier. So, turn up the volume and even dance around the house if you feel like it. 

We all tend to dwell on the past and let our brains take over and make us feel sad. You need to learn how to control such thoughts and keep your mind busy. It is the only ticket out of that sad feeling, and YOU DEFINITELY DESERVE TO BE HAPPY!
