10 Things Successful People Do in the Morning

Ever wonder how the most successful people start their day? We’ve rounded up the 10 things that you should consider doing every morning to make the most out of any day:

10 Things Successful People Do in the Morning

1. Successful people wake up early.

Time is of the essence when you’re dealing with a long list of deadlines and errands. Waking up earlier than usual allows your mind to clear up and tick more tasks off your list.

This is exactly what Virgin Group Founder, Richard Branson does. He routinely wakes up at 5 AM no matter where he is in the world to exercise and spend some quality time with his family before he begins his daily grind.

2. Successful people sweat it out.

Entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, VaynerMedia co-founder, and CEO says,

“I usually work out for 45 minutes to an hour. The specific workout routine varies depending on the day of the week, what I ate, how much I’ve been traveling … There is no one big secret GaryVee workout.”

Most people who exercise during mornings last longer and feel more energetic at work. Pick one you will love: cross training, dancing, running, swimming, biking, or yoga—there are plenty of options to choose from! Find one which will be challenging and enjoyable for you.

3. Successful people eat healthily.

If you want to make your day productive, skipping breakfast is a no-no! Anyone who yearns for success must make it a point to have a healthy breakfast to keep brain juices and energy flowing.

By healthy, we mean a light-yet-hearty meal. Some people have the tendency to eat a heavy meal during mornings and contrary to popular belief, a ‘big breakfast’ can be more detrimental to your health rather than beneficial.

Results of a study published in the Nutrition Journal indicate that people who eat heavy breakfast are more likely to consume more calories throughout the day than people who skip breakfast or eat less.

Danielle Foley, Head of Marketing of WizEssay, loves to make herself a smoothie bowl composed of fruits, oats, and organic ingredients for breakfast. “You may not notice it at first glance, but putting in the effort to carefully choose and prepare what you eat first thing in the morning can do wonders,” Foley says.

4. Fuel up.

Just like a healthy breakfast, drinking water in the morning is essential! It jumpstarts your metabolism, helps the body regenerate new cells, and rehydrate—giving your skin that natural glow!

Tossing in other ingredients like lemon juice, turmeric, mint or basil leaves, and other fruit and vegetable slices is a unique way to add flavor to water and make increasing your water intake interesting. Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington starts her day by drinking hot water with lemon.

5. Squeeze in some quiet time.

Before getting all the hustle and bustle on, do yourself a favor by having a few minutes of quiet time. Grab one of those inspirational books you always see in the store, teach yourself a new skill, water the plants, sweep the yard, walk the dog, meditate, or sit down and just enjoy a moment of silence or maybe listen to your favorite music. Having a fresh mind every morning helps in better decision making and a positive mood throughout the day.

6. Reflect.

While it can be pretty hard to do on a regular basis, successful people take the time to reflect and check on their actions and thoughts. An essential key to success is acknowledging the fact that, as human beings, mistakes can be done and mishaps can happen.

Successful people reflect on their actions and events to avoid doing the same mistake twice, or to prevent committing a new mistake altogether.

7. Successful people stay informed.

The most successful people know the importance of being aware of what’s happening around them. GE CEO Jeff Immelt reads newspapers and watches CNBC first thing in the morning.

Constantly educate yourself on the latest events happening in your country and around the world, especially on pressing issues and developments that are relevant to your field of specialization.

8. Jot down ideas.

Ideas can be found anywhere—in the bedroom just when you’re about to sleep, or even in your dreams as you sleep! Successful people should know how to manage and not simply discard their thoughts and ideas.

Keep a journal and make it a habit to write an entry every morning when your ideas are still fresh and spirits are high. For tech-savvy people, there are numerous apps available on the market to do the trick for you.

9. Successful people plan for the long day ahead.

One good thing to do every morning is to create a list of all the things you have to accomplish before the day ends, including mini-deadlines and a priority level for each task. Having a clear knowledge of the things that need to be finished within the day allows for a more efficient time management.

10. Successful people start with the difficult tasks first.

Once you’re done with a to-do list complete with mini-deadlines and priority levels, put the most difficult tasks and the ones you’ve been dreading to do on the top of your schedule. This is probably one of the hardest things to do, as some people prefer to slowly ease into the day instead of diving into it.

Push yourself to accomplish the harder tasks during the morning when your energy levels are still up and while you’re still refreshed from last night’s sleep. By the time you have finished all of the demanding work, you’ll be less stressed when it comes to finishing the smaller ones in the afternoon and as your work day ends.
